We observe the species in the wild, so it is essential to respect the rules of observation for the safety of those on board but also to minimize disruption to the animals. Thus, in particular for humpback whales and whale sharks, these rules are essential and will be recalled at the briefing before the excursions.

Humpback whales :

approche baleine nosybe pIn Madagascar, the humpback whale is subject to the Inter-Ministerial Order No. 2083/2000 of 8 March 2000 laying down regulations for commercial marine mammal observation:

  • Viewing distance: 100 meters for a group of adults, 200 meters for a couple mother / calf. If whales are static, we can stop the boat engine and let them approach if they wish;
  • Observation time: 1 hour maximum for a group of adults, 30 minutes for a couple mother / calf;
  • Approach: If approaching from the rear, maneuver far out and to the side of the whale, and stay parallel.
  • Boats: No more than 3 boats around a group of whales; All boats on the same side of the whales.

 

Whale sharks:

There is no official rule in Nosy Be / Madagascar to supervise swimming with the whale sharks. However, since 2017, The Madagascarcar Whale sharks Project, with MADAmegafauna, etablished a code of conduct in collaboration with all the others operators !
